The Trials of The Dojo Inspectors: A Soul Science Odyssey

January 14th, 2010

Hi all, Matt here from Soul Science with a round up of semi-pertinent information on Soul Science activity coming into 2010, and to basically get this blog kicked off again, so you can show up for Soul Science info and related drum and bass and liquid funk stuff and find out what we’re up to right here in Auckland, New Zealand.

For new years of course we played the midnight slot at the Detonate festival in New Plymouth, they’ve got a great little vibe building down there for future festivals, and we had a great time rocking out for the crowd down there.

Events coming up include DJ A-Sides “Worldwide” album release tour @ Rising Sun, Jan 29.

Tickets are $20 on the door and support is Soul Science (Romantech + Control) , Zpak, Whitebait and more guests TBA!

But just to give you the skinny on the Dojo Inspectors release we are actually finally nearing completion of this stuff which is seriously a massive relief because it really has dragged on far longer than we hoped, and it became a little bit demoralizing that we were unable to deliver the package as expected.

For those who don’t know the background on Dojo Inspectors it was planned as full length release of  all the material we had that met a certain standard, we didn’t expect it to make huge waves but we could at least present it as an opening shot, a calling card.

Once we had this 30 track mix out, there’d be a little freedom we’d created to go with whatever we felt knowing we’d established a track record with this release, but in 2009, it wasn’t to be!

On top of that the original Soul Science website went down permanently when the host I was with cancelled my account because unbeknownest to me that being based in Utah, they had hardcore anti-nudity clauses and so long story short a rogue pair of boobies somewhere on that network caused the downfall of an empire.

Well maybe not quite so much, but last year I did post up a blog post full of hope and expectation for the release of Dojo Inspectors that got swallowed by the aforementioned void, which was maybe for the best since nothing I was excited about in that post actually happened, in eventuality.

Not until now that is. We’re still planning to go ahead with the singles and the mix but I’m not sure there’ll be the fanfare and trumpeting associated because for us it only underlines the fact that we were 2 months behind the deadline!

In retrospect, I will say that 30 tunes was no mean feat, but it was hard to keep sight of the idea that this release wasn’t designed to be shatteringly brilliant, it was to get something out that could be offered as a musical listening experience, to reach out to fans, and to build from there.

So the harrowing and probably uninteresting details are that we had serious computer hardware issues that although we slogged through anxiously to have a pretty rough 13 track live mix finished for the official release gig that still went ahead on November 6 @ Fu bar, has taken us since then to sort out, including hard drive recovery, 2 rounds of computer repairs and rigourous administration of storage processes for tunes as they are developed.

Also in that space we had the opportunity to go over the tunes with A-Sides, and the chance to get his opinion meant we welcomed the chance to respond to that and make some changes to some of the tunes we felt were appropriate.

But yeah – looking forward to finally announcing the official availability of Dojo Inspectors and pushing that mix out.

We’re already got new tunes on the boil but this time we going to be keeping all that under wraps until we know what we’re doing. No going off half cocked.

I hate half cocks. What could be worse than half a cock that’s gone off?

Also, i have a new mix out “Tough Love”  that I am circulating which was mainly borne of my frustrations at not being able to get in behind the dojo inspectors release, and wanting to keep grinding it on out there.

So that’s going out on hard copy around auckland at the moment and I’ll be back to let you know when you can download, and of course when that Dojo Inspectors final edition mix is up for grabs.
